Teaching the Brain to Read Duncan Milne In this session we will discuss the neural compnents of reading system and the neural circuitry behind reading acqusition. This discussion will focus on how modules are connected together to make a readingsystem. Special emphasis will be given to teaching methods and the benefits of balanced literacy. Finally, the 'phonological model' will be shown to describe poor reading at the behavioural level, while a 'neurological model' used to explain the various heterogeneous typologies observed clinically. |

Why should I have a School Portal for Staff, Parents and Pupils? Keith Goatman The session will focus on discussing the advantages and disadvantages of setting up and managing a school portal. A portal should allow all stakeholders to access MIS data and on-line learning resources stored by the school. The challenges involved in offering such a service as well as the security implications and the workload in managing potentially thousands of users will be discussed. The SIMS Learning Gateway will be used to show how a well designed portal can significantly improve a schools standing with its parents without adding to the schools workload. |
